How WhatsApp pricing works

Two variables set the price of any message: where the recipient is and what kind of message it is. A marketing message to Germany costs more than ten times a utility message to India. There is no single “WhatsApp price”.

The four categories:

  • Marketing — promotions, offers, product news, re-engagement. The most expensive category in every market.
  • Utility — order updates, delivery notices, receipts, appointment reminders. Must be tied to a transaction.
  • Authentication — one-time passcodes and account verification.
  • Service — your replies inside the 24-hour customer service window. These are free. Meta does not charge for them.

The 24-hour customer service window

When a customer messages you, a 24-hour window opens. Inside it you can reply freely, as many times as you like, at no cost. Once it closes, you can only re-open the conversation with an approved message template — and that is billable.

This is why the “messages included” model that most providers sell is incoherent. A support-heavy business might send 80% of its messages inside the free window; a marketing-heavy one almost none. A flat message count charges both the same.
